Meet Donita Smith

Donita Smith, also known as Coach D, is a licensed Senior Cosmetologist, Business Owner, Wig Designer, Hair Replacement Specialist, Hair Colorist, Advanced Educator, and Business Coach.

I’m a certified expert Wella Professionals hair colorist. Also, certified in hair cutting, hair extensions, wig making, hair replacements and business coaching. My work has been featured in commercials and commercial hair publications. I’ve worked as a freelance hair stylist for Black Entertainment Television (BET) and I’ve maintained a solid clientele and built a six figure income behind the salon chair.

After 30 years of styling hair, I’ve decided to take a deep dive into hair replacements and enhancements. More than ever before, people are experiencing hair loss that is beyond the natural aging process. Whether it’s due to a medical issue or related to the overuse of tension on the hair strand and follicle; hair loss is serious and can be devastating to one’s self esteem. I’m committed to helping women and men know that they have options. They can wear a hair unit that will look and feel as good as their natural hair.

 I am the Director of Education for the MIAA Beauty Institute located in Forestville, MD. We offer Hybrid Cosmetology, Esthetics, ​Eyelash Extension and Nail Technology programs ensuring our ​students receive top-notch training. I’ve sponsored several young women and men through the MD State Cosmetology Apprenticeship Program that are currently making their marks in the industry. I’ve taught cosmetology education in the Prince Georges County public school system in MD.

I understand the struggles of raising kids while furthering my education and working two jobs to make ends meet. I know what it’s like to be a single, married and divorced woman operating a business. I started a business from the ground up with little foreknowledge about how to keep costs down and the doors open, but through trial and error, I stand; experience is a really good teacher.

I’m an advocate for state board licensure and advanced education. I believe beauty industry professionals should always seek advanced education to stay fresh and relevant in an ever changing industry. Good customer service and customer relationships are key to longevity in the beauty industry.
